Yoga

Yoga is an ancient science of life which is over 5000 years old. It began in India and has been passed down from teacher to student.

Indian scriptures that form the basis of yoga are: The Vedas, The Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali, The Upanishads and The Bhagavad Gita. Pantanjali’s eight steps of yoga are commonly used today. They comprise of the following:

  1. Yama – Control, abstinence – non-violence, non-stealing, truthfulness, continence and non-attachment.
  2. Niyama – Rules of conduct – purity, contentment, self-study, self-discipline and surrender to a higher source.
  3. Asana – Posture.
  4. Pranayama – Breathing exercises.
  5. Pratyahara – Withdrawal of the senses and control of the senses.
  6. Dharana – Concentration.
  7. Dhyana – Meditation.
  8. Samadhi – Contemplation. To be one with the object of meditation.

 

A typical yoga class will incorporate bodily postures, breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation. The main aim of yoga is the union of mind, body and soul. It is also a way of life. By practicising yoga you can improve your overall health and well-being.
